He credited "Tubthumping" with changing that, telling The Guardian, "It's not our most political or best song, simply it brought us dorsum together. The song is well-nigh united states of america – every bit a class and as a band. The dazzler of it was we had no idea how large it would be."[vi]

Critical reception [edit]

Larry Moving-picture show from Billboard wrote, "Some records just demand attention: 'Tubthumping' is ane of the rare few. You tin can spend three times the runway'southward running time plucking out the seemingly disparate sounds and assorted genre references—starting with the forceful alterna-rock guitar scratches, the hip-hop-derived beats, and the swing-style horns. Holding it all together are the kind of rousing, gang-similar chants that you hear at football games. Sounds odd, eh? Well, you lot won't soon forget this jam later first listen. And you lot'll likely exist hearing it on pop and modern rock stations for months to come. If this gem is indicative of the tone of the human activity'southward forthcoming album, it should be quite a caput trip."[12] A reviewer from Daily Record described it equally an "irritating catchy drinking anthem from the anarchist band".[13] Information technology was also called a "raucous anthem".[14] Pan-European magazine Music & Media said, "After a decade and a one-half spent equally indie heroes this commonage is probable to suspension into the mainstream in a big manner".[xv] Ian Hyland of the Sunday Mirror rated information technology eight out of 10, writing, "Sing a terrace chant, mention lager and the rugby boys will be making boozed-up human pyramids on the dance floor in seconds. And you'll take a monster hit – skilful work, chum."[16] Troy J. Augusto from Variety declared it as a "drinking-and-dancing anthem" and "the quirk hit of the flavor".[17]
