Power Rangers 5E Game Explained: Morphin' Time For Tabletop RPGs [UPDATED]
Hasbro and Renegade Games Studios have expanded their relationship with Power Rangers to create a new RPG based on the 5E OGL system.
[Update 05/10/2020 11:43 AM: This article has been modified to more accurately reflect the fact that Renegade Game Studios is developing 5E OGL games and not D&D-based games]
A new Power Rangers tabletop roleplaying game is being made using the 5E system. Renegade Game Studios has announced an expansion to its partnership with Hasbro, which previously producedPower Rangers: Heroes of the Grid, a Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers-themed board game. The partnership with Hasbro will be used to create a newPower Rangers tabletop RPG using the 5E system.
This partnership is possible thanks to Hasbro owning Wizards of the Coast since 1999, allowing Renegade to create games using the same system. While there is not a name yet released for the upcomingPower Rangers RPG, it is intended to be released sometime in 2021 (possibly in Q2) alongside aPower Rangers deck-building game. Renegade's renewed partnership with the toy giant Hasbro also adds the licensing for other properties, such as G.I. Joe, to the Renegade library.
Using the 5E system for the game will ensure accessibility for new players, given the system's focus on ease of access and its relative popularity. Hasbro first announced the new game viaForbes, but details have not been released regarding its gameplay or the overall system, and thus very little is known so far about the product. But, as with most tabletop RPGs, the hope is that this newPower Rangers game will let fans young and old play out their childhood fantasies and be able to "be" aPower Ranger.
The board game created by Renegade Game Studios,Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid, tasks two to five players with taking the role of the Power Rangers and handing out a righteous dose of justice to waves of monsters attacking Angel Grove. Heroes of the Grid plays very similarly to a classic episode of the originalMighty Morphin' Power Rangersseries, so it's easy to assume the RPG might play more akin to a differentPower Rangers season, such asPower Rangers Ninja Force orPower Rangers Jungle Fury. ThePower Rangers series follow a "monster of the week" style of storytelling, with less focus on overcoming hurdles on a journey than on preventing the destruction of a home base (although some series deviate from this norm). With this in mind, it's difficult to say what the primary focus of the 5E-basedPower Rangers RPG will be. However, given the nature of most tabletop RPGs, it will largely be up to the individual game master to decide how they want to play.
Nostalgia will be the driving force behind the marketing of this game, as its intended audience is adult fans ofPower Rangers. The franchise has gone through a total of 28 different seasons and will finish airing the final episode of the current season,Power Rangers Beast Morphers, in December of 2020. The next season,Power Rangers: Dino Fury, may coincide directly with the initial release of the Power Rangers RPG, as both are slated to premiere in 2021.
